Black ebony grows in Seyhan, Samanta and Bombay, and brown ebony grows in Makasar Island. It has red-brown stripes on the almost black bay ground. This type of ebony tree is better known as makasar.
STRUCTURE:
The belly is woody. Its outer wood is wide. It is finely porous. The pore pits are filled with a unique substance. It creates very decorative line and vein patterns.
COLOR:
The outer wood is pink gray or pale red brown. The inner wood is black. It has irregular, light and dark colored veins on it.
FEATURES:
It is very suitable for hardwood production. It shows superior resistance properties in changing weather conditions. It shrinks a lot and cracks when drying. The dust generated while sanding irritates the eyes and respiratory organs.
WEIGHT:
The specific gravity of air-dry scissors is 1.10 g/cm3.
USAGE:
It is used in the production of decorative elements in high-value and expensive furniture. It is also used for the same purpose in interior architecture. It is especially sought after in lathe and inlay works, musical instruments, furniture and door handles, carved works, and knife handles. It is generally used as a coating in Turkey.
PRESENCE IN THE MARKET:
Ebony and solid makasar are sold in pieces of 20-40 kg. In Turkey, it is sometimes sold as veneer.
